__________Okay so, transferring over to any UCSD is slightly more complicated than other UCs due to our "unique" and confusing six college system. Most transfers do not fully understand the reqs they have to complete even after they're here and end up here longer than they have to be. In order to try and help people both decide which college they want to transfer to and help those that are here already, we've broken down what's really important and put it on this page. Good luck!
One BIG mistake transfers make is that they follow and complete IGETC and then forget to get it certified. It may cost 5 bucks, but just go to your registrar's office and make sure you certify your IGETC before you get to UCSD, otherwise it may not be valid.
MARSHALL
The real deal:
________TMC accepts IGETC as is, with no other catches, except that you have to get it certified before you start taking classes here. If you use IGETC, you need to complete 2 six-unit lower-division courses from the "Dimensions of Culture" (DOC) series. You also have to take two upper-division classes that are "noncontiguous" to your major. That just means outside of your field and related fields. There's lists on the IGETC link below. One of these classes must have "significant writing." There's a list of these classes in the link below also.
More info on TMC: this is from the admissions website and has some really good stuff on it.
GE reqs in general: this website is from the official Marshall page
IGETC outline: this says what I just said but in a lot more words
Transferring without IGETC: an outline for non-IGETC people
WARREN
The real deal:
________Warren accepts IGETC as is, with no other catches, except that you have to get it certified before you start taking classes here. The only thing you have to do is take two upper-division classes that are "noncontiguous" to your major. That just means outside of your field and related fields. There's lists on the GE link below.

MUIR
The real deal:
________Muir accepts IGETC as is, with no other catches, except that you have to get it certified before you start taking classes here. The only thing you have to do is take one cultural diversity course and one writing course. You can take either Muir Writing 50 or 125.

REVELLE |
The real deal:
________Revelle does NOT accept IGETC as is, it has some extra reqs, giving it the nickname "IGETC plus." yes, people are huge dorks here. Anyway, all the info is confusing that is online, and I can't get a hold of any transfers that are actually in Revelle, so this is the most simple language I could find: "Students pursuing majors in science or engineering may use lower-division preparatory courses to fulfill the college's calculus and science requirements. The foreign language requirement can be met by either passing UCSD language proficiency exam, or completing a third semester/fourth quarter of language instruction at the community college or upon enrollment at UCSD." yeah, that's the easiest to read thing I could find. I'm still looking though, so hopefully I'll update this soon. |
More info on Revelle: this is from the admissions website and has some really good stuff on it.
GE reqs in general: even Revelle's links are complicated. Hit this link, click on "Academic Life" and then "Answers for Transfers." This website is from the official Revelle page and says what I just said but in way way too many words and is very confusing. good luck with all that.
| ERC
(Roosevelt) |
The real deal:
________ERC does NOT accept IGETC. You must take the 3 lower division Making of the Modern World (MMW) classes no matter what. If you didn't fulfill the English req at your JC, you have to take 6 MMW classes. In addition to this, you have take 2 regional specialization classes. (the list is on the GE link below.) Also, you have to fulfill a language req. This means that if you took less than 4 courses at the JC, you have to take a placement test to see if you need more language classes.. fun fun fun. Also, you have to make sure that you complete at least one 12-15 page paper either as part of a class or on your own. The links below are really helpful.

Even though it's a lot of work, MMW does have a purpose. Here's some thoughts on it from Jordan Rosenfeld, a former AS senator and transfer rep to SCERC: "MMW is a struggle to
better understand the world. The research papers are challenging and
demanding, but when you've completed one, you know you have produced
one of your best, most articulate arguments. Ultimately, you will not
only know the events that led up to today, but understand the complexity
of this modern world." |
